Detailed description of Purgatory Golf Club

Purgatory Golf Club is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Noblesville, Indiana.

Purgatory golf course first opened for play in 2000. The par-72 course was designed by Ronald L. Kern.

Purgatory Golf Club is a resort quality golf course located just north of Indianapolis. The course covers 218 acres and is dedicated solely to golf.

There are a minimum of six tees on each hole, so the course tempts golfers of all skill levels. When played from the front tees at only 4,562 yards, Purgatory is one of the shortest courses in Indiana. When played from the back tees at over 7,700 yards, Purgatory is the longest golf course in Indiana.

Purgatory Golf Club facility plays to a maximum distance of 7,754 yards for a course rating of 78.1 and a slope rating of 142.

Hole #1: "Pride" is Purgatory's shortest par four. It's a sharp dogleg at the fairway bunkers. The approach shot goes into a slightly elevated green. The long hitter, aided by the prevailing winds, has a shot at driving this hole.

Hole #2: "Stains of the Inferno" is a medium-to-long par 4 that challenges the golfer to cut off as much of the lake as possible while avoiding the bunkers lining the right side of the fairway. The green is guarded by water to the left and a bunker on the front right.

Hole #3: "Impenetrable Fortress" This Par 3 features an elevated, well-bunkered green that slopes to the back. The tee shot requires an accurate shot to an elevated green with deep bunkers on the left and right side. The green has a center ridge that makes a long putt difficult. The green slopes away from the ridge on both sides.

Hole #4: "The Siren" This hole is a par 4 that plays to 473 yards from the back (Purgatory) tees. From the forward tees, "The Siren" measures 292 yards. This is the #6 handicap hole on the course. Just keep it in the fairway on this long, but straight par 4.

Hole #5: "The Centaur" The straight par 5 has trees to the left, and a large fairway bunker on the right. This bunker will come into play with a less than perfect tee shot. This hole ranges from 367 yards short to 551 yards long. Water comes in to play the last 140 yards along the right side of the fairway and green. The hole can be reached with two excellent shots leaving a possibility birdie on this hole.

Hole #6: "Eunoe" This hole is a par 4, with a slight dogleg to the right into the prevailing wind. It has an elevated, 2-tiered and very undulating green. The landing area has large fairway bunkers on both the left and right side

Hole #7: "River of Flames" Club selection is important to carry the water to a green that is bunkered in the back on this par 3 hole. The only bailout area is located to the right of this green. The green is fairly small and flat with subtle movements.

Hole #8: "The Serpent" This long, slightly downhill par 4 requires a straight tee shot to avoid the bunkers on both sides of the fairway. From the fairway, you look down into the green, where you see a small putting surface that has bunkers to the left and the right side.

Hole #9: "St. Patrick" The finishing hole on the front side is a challenging par 5 which is played slightly uphill and into the prevailing winds. Your second shot must be placed in a well-bunkered area to have a short or lofted iron into the well-bunkered, slightly elevated green.

Hole #10: "Paradise" This is a long par 4 ranging from 283 yards at the front tees, and 469 at the back tees. It has large trees dotting the right side of the fairway on both your tee shot and approach shot to the green. The green has a large bunker left and a small, deep bunker on the front right.

Hole #11: "Eden" This is a medium length par 4, ranging from 270 yards from the front tees to 404 yards from the back tees. It presents the golfer with trees, fairway bunkering, and mounds. The approach to the green is protected by a rock wall and bunkering behind the green.

Hole #12 "Valley of the Kings" Elevated tees range in length from 117 yards to 233 yards. The tees shot is over water that is surrounded by mounds with flowing fescue. There are bunkers just short and right of the green, and a bentgrass approach area to the left of the green.

Hole #13 "Everlasting Torment" This hole features one of the longest par 5's you'll ever play. It ranges from 358 yards at the front to 735 yards from the back. Elevated tees and the wind at your back helps shorten this hole. The fairway is bunkered on both sides and challenges you to hit long and straight shots. The undulated and sloping green is a difficult target.

Hole #14: "Sweet Misery" This hole is a long, straight par 4. It ranges from 246 yards at the front to 467 yards at the back. It plays into the wind with an elevated, bunkered green.

Hole #15 "St. Michael the Archangel" Carry the ridge in the fairway and you'll get an additional roll on your tee shot on this par 4 hole. Beware of the large bunkers facing you from the tee and approach shot to the green. The green area offers a hidden back left tier to a sloping green from left to right. Miss the green to the right and your golf ball falls into a collection area located about 10 feet below the putting surface.

Hole #16 "Blinding Cloud of Smoke" The sixteenth hole is named Blinding Cloud of Smoke. The hole is completely lined with bunkers. When you get to the green and look back towards the tees, the bunkers disappear, just like smoke.

Hole #17 "Hell's-Half Acre" This short par-3 hole ranges in length from 65 yards short to 168 yards long. It is surrounded by a sea of sand bunkers creating an island green. Seventeen is one of the most striking golf holes in the region. The large green has subtle undulations located throughout the putting surface.

Hole #18 "The Gryphon" This finishing par 5 hole ranges from 385 yards at the front tees to 521 yards at the back tees. It offers a choice with a double fairway from the tee shot, and an excellent chance to finish with a birdie. The hole can even be reached in two shots making it an eagle. The fairway is well-guarded by sand bunkers left, right, and center. The green has large bunkers front left and right as well as behind the putting surface.

Day 76 - 100 days, 100 courses (Tuesday, May 28, 2019)

Just yesterday I was telling people that one outcome of this trip (100 days, 100course) is that no golf course intimidates me anymore. I was wrong.

When you stand on the first tee box at Purgatory Golf Club you can’t help but be scared.

The narrow fairways, rolling hills, and deep rough are downright terrifying. Having finished I know why Bryan of Bryan Golf wanted to be here. What a course! So many challenges, so much beauty. Not to be missed.

I shot a 48 and 38 for an 86 with 3 balls stuck in Purgatory.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Excellent well conditioned course. Not overly difficult, and not tricked-up, but there are few blind shots. Probably need to play this once to learn where to place the ball, or play with a member. Some longer holes make for a great challenge. Greens and fairways were in great shape.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area

I live in the area - if my buddies wanted to do a central Indiana golf trip we would play Purgatory, Prairie View, Rock Hollow and Trophy Club. Maybe throw in Heartland Crossing. Honorable Mention to Fort Harrison and The Brickyard. Purgatory is pretty unique. Hard but interesting - with some birdie opportunities. My most recent round was very early and very uncrowded. Conditions were excellent. This is a tough golf course - but fair if you are a decent golfer.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area
